How educative toys function as a means for parents to prepare their children for their future lives as adults would seem to constitute a good subject of research. However, the ethnographic approach aiming at uncovering what is left unsaid or innuendoes shows that toy-objects apparently play another role. They would seem to act as a shared space between mother and child, allowing relationships to develop whereby the mother's strategy is to attempt to assign a role to herself and her child. Through this ludic exchange, the mother tries to model a reference of what being a good mother is, and thus portrays the positive side of herself as a good mother, in Goffman's terms. The toy-object therefore represents for the dyad a pretext to develop a space that may be deemed to be positional and not transitional, as in Winnicott's understanding. Being a good mother would therefore involve choosing the correct toy-object and animating it as an intermediary space between the family and social spheres.

Le jouet éducatif comme un moyen pour les parents de préparer l'enfant à son futur métier d'adulte semblait constituer une bonne hypothèse de recherche. Mais la démarche ethnographique sachant traquer les non-dits, les sous-entendus, montre que l'objet-jouet semble avoir un autre rôle : il constituerait un espace partagé entre la mère et l'enfant, permettant des relations où la stratégie de celle-ci reposerait sur une perspective d'assignation des places mère-enfant. Au travers de cet échange ludique, elle chercherait à modéliser un statut référentiel de bonne mère et donc de montrer d'elle sa face positive en tant que bonne mère, au sens où Goffman l'entend. L'objet-jouet serait donc pour la dyade, un objet-prétexte pour se ménager un espace que l'on n'appellerait plus transitionnel au sens de Winnicott, mais positionnel. Être une bonne mère relèverait du choix du bon objet-jouet et de la manière de le faire vivre comme espace intermédiaire entre la sphère du familial et la sphère du social.
