This thesis analyses the birth and evolution of the eritrean national liberation movement. It is divided into two parts. The first deals with the pre-colonial history of aritrea, the italian colonisation (1890-1941), the british administration under united nations mandate, and the 'pseudo-federation' with ethiopia which ended brutally in 1962 when eritrea was annexed by ethiopia. The second part is devoted to the armed struggle which began in 1961 by the various liberation movements, to the present; the construction of 'liberated zones' by the eritrean peoples liberation front and its achievements on the political, social, and infrastructural fronts (creation of mass organisation and associations, the liberation of women, and the construction of hospitals, schools, and roads. In conclusion, the author foresees the advent of an independent eritrea, which would open an interesting chapter in contemporary african history.

Cette these analyse la naissance et l'evolution du mouvement national erythreen. Elle est divisee en deux parties. La premiere est consacree a l'histoire precoloniale, a la colonisation italienne (1890-1941), a l'administration britannique (1941-1951), et a la 'pseudo-federation' avec l'ethiopie impriale, jusqu'a l'annexion de l'erythree par ce ce dernier en 1962. La deuxieme partie traite plus particulierement de la lutte armee menee depuis 1961 par les divers fronts erythreens de liberation jusqu'aujourd'hui; la construction des 'zones liberees' par le front populaire de liberation de l'erythree, et les realisations sur les plans politique, social, et infrastructurel (creation d'organisations et d'associations de masses, la participation des femmes, et la construction d'hopitaux, d'ecoles, et de routes). En conclusion, l'auteur prevoit la naissance d'un etat independant de l'erythree, qui ouvrira un chapitre interessant dans l'histoire africaine contemporaine.
