Wanting an interdisciplinary point of view and starting with the analysis of the geographical mobility of people, this Ph. D research studies mechanisms of insertion of North-African people in the city, and tries to understand what are their cultural products and how they managed to appropriate the territory. Three main lines of research are following from this. The first one is considerating the migratory process of North-Africanin St-Etienne until their settling in the city from the geographical, historical, and sociological point of view. The second part of the research, open to the idea of social control, is devoted to the study of the management and the control of these people during the colonial period. The third part is studying the cultural and urban practices which remain inscribed in the public space of St-Etienne, so as to bring to light the variety of "territorial experiences" of North-African people.

Adoptant un point de vue interdisciplinaire et partant d'une analyse d'un processus de mobilité géographique, cette recherche doctorale étudie les mécanismes d'insertion des populations maghrébines dans la ville, sous l'angle des productions culturelles et des logiques d'appropriation territoriale. Trois axes de recherche découlent de cette problématique. Premièrement, cette thèse examine à partir d'une triple approche géographique, historique, et sociologique le processus migratoire des populations maghrébines à Saint-Etienne, jusqu'à leur installation dans la ville. La deuxième partie de la thèse ouverte sur la notion de contrôle social, est consacrée à l'étude des formes des gestion et d'encadrement de cette migration durant tout le temps de la période coloniale. La troisième partie propose d'étudier les pratiques culturelles et urbaines inscrites et visibles dans l'espace public stéphanois afin de rendre compte de la diversité des "expériences territoriales" des Maghrébins.
