Given the restrictive connotation attached to the word wasteland, the term uncultivated land is prefered. It's defined as an area of land that has not been cultivated for at least a year and has become overgrown. If uncultivated land appears as a constant feature of the landscape, the logic of its development has varied over the centuries. In the present context it results from the interaction of numerous factors, of an economic, social and natural character. In order to define a management policy for rural areas, it's essential to take such factors into account and to evaluate their importance. In areas with a fragile economic base, rural uncultivated lands have never been more than an indicator of more important spatial changes

Le mot friche étant affecté d'une connotation négative, l'auteur lui préfère celui d'inculte. Il est défini comme une terre abandonnée par la culture depuis un an au moins et recouvert de végétation. Si l'inculte apparait comme une constante paysagère, la logique de sa progression a varié au cours des siècles. Dans le contexte actuel, il résulte de la synergie de facteurs multiples, d'ordre social, économique ou naturel. La prise en compte et l'évaluation concrète de ces facteurs est indispensable à la définition d'une politique de gestion des espaces ruraux. L'inculte rural dans les zones fragiles, n'est jamais qu'un indicateur d'une mutation profonde de l'espace
