Alger, une centralité éclatée : crise du centre et nouvelles tendances urbaines

Originally, Algiers (then called El Djezair) was made up of a specific urban and functional urban structure. The French colonisation has had a long lasting influence on both Algiers town centre and on a large part of its surrounding urban structure. With its independence comes a new rupture in the urban scheduling of Algiers as it becomes a capital town that entails some new leading functions. In this study, we investigate the functionality of Algiers and the tendencies of the scheme of centrality. First, the functional and urban nature of Algiers town centre is exposed along with the limits of the colonial inheritance. The specificities of the historical core (casbah) are also shown together with its physical state and functional nature. Then our research moves on to the totality of the Wilaya of Algiers, the effort put into urbanising the suburb, the introduction of new residential functions and also tertiary and industrial activities. We also considered the increase of the transport network, the implementation of the leading functions in the surrounding space.

A ses origines, Alger, appelée (El Djezair) est représentée par une structure urbaine et fonctionnelle spécifique. La colonisation française marque à jamais, le centre ville d’Alger et une grande partie de la structure urbaine périphérique. A l’indépendance, Alger a assisté à une nouvelle rupture dans la planification urbaine, une ville capitale qui intègre de nouvelles fonctions. Nous nous interrogeons dans le cadre de ce travail sur la fonctionnalité de l’espace d’Alger et les tendances du schéma de centralité. L’étude explique la nature urbaine et fonctionnelle du centre ville d’Alger et montre les limites de l’héritage colonial. Elle évoque les spécificités du noyau historique (Casbah), son état physique et sa nature fonctionnelle. Ensuite, la recherche se porte sur la totalité de la wilaya d’Alger, l’effort d’urbanisation de la périphérie, l’introduction des nouvelles fonctions résidentielles, tertiaires et industrielles, la multiplication des réseaux de transport, l’implantation des fonctions de commandement dans l’espace périphérique.
