La rue à Rome, miroir de la ville : entre l'émotion et la norme

We focus on three key-moments of the constitution of our modern urbanity through the study of the street in Rome. They can be understood as dialectical positions. The first is the foundation, warrant of a link between men and cosmos. The celebrations confirm it, and the street symbolizes this link. Social harmony relies on that special communication between men and their environment. The second movement appears with the perspective. Street becomes a mere tool for the esthetics of power, especially with popes. Finally, the Risorgimento unwinds the last movement with the destruction of the old streets and the appraisal of traffic as a new symbol of civilization. The street, then, is just useful as a highway or a nostalgic landmark. But it does not belong to the people anymore. That nostalgia feeds strong movements or militancy such as tourism, ecology, and patrimony.

Notre étude porte sur la rue à Rome à travers trois moments essentiels dans la constitution de notre urbanité. Le premier est celui de la fondation de la ville : l'éloignement du monde naturel est exorcisé par l'affirmation d'une continuité entre les ordres cosmique et humain, renouvelée par des fêtes ritualisées. Ce renouvellement garantit la préservation d'une régularité sociale en harmonie avec celle de la ville bâtie. La rue symbolise ce lien. Son oubli marque l'entrée dans la modernité. Le second mouvement dialectique correspond en effet au XVe siècle : la perspective instrumentalise la rue aux seules fins du pouvoir. Les habitants sont comme chassés de leur propre ville. Le dernier mouvement coi͏̈ncide avec l'Unification et l'édification de la capitale. La rue ne sert plus qu'à circuler et les rues anciennes détruites marquent l'entrée de la rue dans le patrimoine. L'éloignement est alors total et nourrit certains mouvements hostiles à la ville, symptôme d'un malaise profond.
