After having functioned as a national metropolis, fes has been relegate to the modest rank of a regional capital, following the deep changes induced bye colonization and annexation of morocco to the european economic space. Presently, the problem of fes lies in the necessity to integrate its economic, social, cultural and urbanistic heritage to the demands of the modern world. Owning to demographic growth and unbalanced employment market, the economy of fes is becoming excessively informal. Migration has already destroyed the traditional social hierarchies of fes, thus contributing to the elagement of poor social spheres. These changes have resulted in an extension of non-normative dwelling as well as the control of urban expansion. Hence an identity crisis illustrated by the burst of traditional territorialities and reinforced by the confusion of town-dwellers by the changes affecting their town, and the attitude of neo-twon-dwellers who are not willing to abide by the cultural model of the host town. Is this an "urban crisis" or rather the premisse of transition toward a new town, a new form townsmanship ?

Apres avoir tout au long de son histoire fonctionne en metropole nationale, fes a ete releguee au modeste rang de capitale regionale, consecutivement aux mutations profondes induites par la colonisation et par l'annexion du maroc a l'espace economique europeen. Son probleme majeur reside actuellement dans la necessite d'integrer ses nombreux heritages economiques, sociaux, culturels et urbanistiques aux necessites du monde moderne. C'est ainsi que, sous l'effet de la croissance demographique et des desequilibres du marche de l'emploi, son economie a tendance a s'informaliser de plus en plus ; pendant que l'immigration a deja destructure ses hierarchies sociales traditionnelles et contribue au gonflement des spheres sociales pauvres ces mutations devaient se traduire par une forte extension des formes d'habitat non normatives et tenir en echec les politiques de maitrise urbaine. De la, une crise d'identite ; mise en evidence par l'eclatement des territorialites traditionnelles et confrontee par la deroute de citadins face aux bouleversements qui traversent leur ville et par la non identification des neo-citadins au modele culturel de la ville hote. Est-ce la une "crise urbaine" ou plutot les premisses d'une transition vers une nouvelle ville, une nouvelle forme de citadinite ?
