Agricultural expansion and deforestation are complex processes. They are interlinked with different political, economic and social factors at local, national and interna- tional levels. This thesis is a preliminary and not exhastive attempt to analyse these problems in a global and systemic perspective. It studies one local case in peten guatemala, demostrating how agricultural modernization, tropical forest colonization and exportation led-growth have not been historically, the right answers to guatemalan forest development. On the contrary, they have given rise to poverty, violence and environmental degradation all over the country. Following the ecodevelopment principles the thesis proposes some elements of an agroforestry strategy to stop agricultural expansin and tropical forest deforestation. This strategy cant bi an up-down directional model. It has to articulate the global paradigme with democratic decision making at regional and local levels. It has also to coordinate social development with environmental items, promoting the political, institutional and technological changes needed for a sustainable forest development to exist. Finally, the thesis comes to the conclusion that only the peoples's participation and organization would allow a pressure strong enough over the different institutions and governements so as to make them to start implementing these changes. The thesis has four chapters, the firs studies the mains agricultural policies since the 1950s and their influence on the forest and on the living conditions of the rural people. It shows also, briefly, how the united state's agricultural policies had in, fluenced the guatemalan agricultural policies. The second chapter analyzes the agroforestry systems as a possible tool for building a sustainable forest development. The third sudies peten, inorder to undersatnd how the national agricultural policies have influenced the local development. Finally in the conclusions, the thesis proposes some elements for an agroforestry ecodevelopment strategy in guatemala.

Les processus d'expansion de la frontiere agricole et de deforestation au guatemala sont des processus complesxes qui se trouvent en etroite relation avec des differents facteurs politiques, economiques, sociaux et ecologiques a differents niveau, local, ! national et international. Pour les analyser de maniere critique il est donc necessaire de prendre en compte l'ensemble de ces facteurs et de ces niveau. Dans cette these, nous affirmons que l'ecodeveloppement nous donne les elements theoriques et les cate, gories conceptuelles necessaires pour faire cette analyse. La these etude en particulier, l'agroforesterie en tant que l'un des outils technolo, giques qui peuvent aider a la construction d'un nouveau developpement de la foret. Elle souligne, cependant, que l'groforesterie n'est pas une solution miracle. Pour qu'un developpement durable de la foret prenne place, il faudrait que l'implantation de l'a- groforesteriese coordonne et s'articule, dans le cadre d'une strategie d'ecodeveloppe- ment, avec une restructuration politique et socio-economique, un changement institution, nel et une meilleure distribution de ressources. Il faudrait egalement un changement dans les attitudes et dans les comportements individuels et collectifs a tous les niveaux. La these se compose de quatre parties: la premiere etudie les principales politiques agricoles du pays depuis les annees 50, la maniere dont elles ont ete influences par les politiques agricoles des etats-unis et leur impact sur la foret et sur le niveau de vie de la population rurale. La deuxieme partie comporte une breve analyse des syste, mes agroforestiers, en tant que trait d'union entre le mal-developpement et l'ecode- veloppement. La troisieme partie etudie une region specifique du pays, le peten, pour y analyser l'impact des differentes politiques nationales au niveau local. Finalement, dans la quatrieme partie, elle presente les conclusion et quelques elements pour une strategie d'ecodeveloppement agroforestier au guatemala.
