The aim of this thesis is to study the determinants of manufacturing foreign direct investment in ASEAN countries. In the first part we refer to the macro and micro-economic theory of the location. The limits of these approaches find their extension in the synthetic analysis. The meso-economic aspect of investments allows the complementarity of the determinants tied to the comparative advantages and the competitive advantages. Upon this we have developed and adapted to the asean countries some concepts joint to the competitive and comparative logical of foreign investment. Both of these interconnected logical refer respectively to the strategic and competitive behaviour of the firms and to the shift and the hierarchy of comparative advantages. The second part of this thesis follows empirically the determinants of investment. The first step consist to point out the importance of location in the manufacturing sector. The second and last step emphasize the evolution of determinants. They show, parallelly to the determinants based on the comparative advantages, the development of the determinants focused on the expansion of market share. The existence of the above mentioned logical is confirmed by an econometric test. In this sense, the evolution and or the "sophistication" of the comparative advantages is tied to the development of competitive advantages of the located foreign firms.

L'objet de cette thèse est d'étudier les déterminants des investissements directs manufacturiers dans les pays de l'ASEAN. Nous ferons référence dans une première partie à la théorie macro et micro-économique de la délocalisation. Les limites de ces approches trouvent leur dépassement dans l'analyse synthétique. L'aspect méso-économique de l'investissement assure la complémentarité des déterminants relatifs aux avantages comparatifs et aux avantages compétitifs. Sur cette base nous avons développé et adapté aux pays de l'ASEAN des concepts liés à la logique compétitive et comparative de l'investissement direct. Ces deux logiques interconnectées font respectivement référence au comportement concurrentiel et stratégique des firmes et aux glissements et à la hiérarchisation des avantages comparatifs. La deuxième partie de cette thèse suit de façon empirique les déterminants de l'investissement. Une première étape consiste à cerner l'importance des délocalisations effectuées dans le secteur manufacturier. La seconde et dernière étape mettent en lumière l'évolution des déterminants. Elles soulignent, en parallèle des déterminants liés aux avantages comparatifs, le développement des déterminants axés sur les luttes de parts de marché. L'existence des logiques d'investissements précitées est confirmée par un test économétrique. Dès lors, l'évolution et ou la "sophistication" des avantages comparatifs entre bien en phase avec le développement des avantages compétitifs des firmes étrangères délocalisées.
