Networks technologies involve the existence of technological interdependencies and externalities. Because of these interdemendencies, the market can't achieve an efficient coordination of the choices. This can lead to the selection of a less performing standard or to the plurality of standards. An explicit coordination can take the form of the government intervention, the standardization comites or the interfirm cooperation.

Les technologies de reseau impliquent l'existence d'interdependances technologiques et d'externalites. En presence de ces interdependances, le marche ne parvient pas a realiser une coordination efficace des choix des agents. Cela peut conduire au choix d'une norme moins efficace ou a une pluralite de normes. Une coordination explicite des choix doit alors etre envisagee. Cette coordination formelle peut etre assuree par l'etat, le comite de normalisation ou encore la cooperation inter-firme.
