The teenek indians of north-east mexico present a situation of apparent acculturation, accompanied, moreover, by particularly self-demeaning discourses. However, these characteristics, together with an absence of clearly ethnic traits (such as traditional costumes, agricultural rituals, original ceremonies, or a system of religious "cargos"), has not plunged the teenek into anomy, since they have preserved their language and a certain cosmology proper to mesoamerican tradition. This situation disputed commonly held assumptions about interethnic contacts and the resulting acculturation of indians societies and, above all, put to the fore the issue of teenek identity. Beyond the more global analysis of the historical and social factors that led to the differentiated condition of the teenek in the margins of national society, the indigenous exegesis of cultural difference, recovered in this thesis, makes explicit a teenek theory of social distinctions. Teenek cosmology has indeed integrated historical evolution and sociocultural changes in a supernatural reality linked to the diseases and the territory, with the latter turned in this manner into the locus of ancient time memory. This cosmology helps the teenek explain their marginal and subordinated position in front of the mestizos. The kinship linking the teenek to prehuman ancestors turned into underworld beings puts them in an intermediate position, neither that of mestizos nor that of the chthonian beings. The self-demeaning discourses make sense of this situation while at the same time-through their link to the history of the ancestors - they ancestors - they serve as a support foundation of their ethnic identity. It is therefore by means of this cosmology that take shape the registration of alterity (both human and extra-human) and teenek identity itself.

Les indiens teeneks au nord-est du mexique affichent une situation d'apparente deculturation, accompagnee de surcroit par des discours particulierement autodenigrants. Cependant, ces caracteristiques ajoutes a l'absence de traits ethniques apparents chez ce groupe (inexistence de vetements traditionnels, de rituels agricoles, de ceremonies particulieres, du systeme des charges religieuses. . . ) n'ont pas plonge les teeneks dans l'anomie car ceux-ci ont preserve leur langue et une certaine vision du monde propre a la tradition mesoamericaine. Cette situation remettait ainsi en cause quelques-uns des lieux communs concernant les contacts interethniques et l'acculturation des societes indiennes qui en decoule et posait surtout la question du fondement de l'identite teenek. Ainsi au dela de l'analyse plus globale des facteurs historiques et sociaux expliquant la condition marginale et differenciee des teeneks par rapport a la societe nationale, l'exegese indigene de la diversite culturelle, sondee dans cette these, fait ressortir la theorie teenek de la difference sociale. La vision du monde teenek a en effet integre les evolutions historiques et les changements socioculturels dans une realite surnaturelle liee aux maladies et au territoire, devenus de la sorte les espaces de la memoire des temps anciens. Cette vision du monde permet finalement aux teeneks de rendre compte de leur position marginale et subordonnee face aux metis. La filiation qui les lie aux ancetres presolaires devenus etres de l'inframonde, relegue les teeneks dans une position intermediaire qui n'est ni celle des metis ni celle de ces etres chthoniens. Les discours autodenigrants justifient alors cette situation et en meme temps - du fait que ceux-ci sont relies a l'histoire de leurs ancetres - ils servent egalement de support a leur identite ethnique. C'est donc a travers cette conception du monde qu'est organise le registre de l'alterite (humaine et extra-humaine) et que se constitue l'identite teenek.
