The subject of this thesis is : - to analyse the reinterpretation to which the operation (surgical act) is relevant, in the whole of representations relating to excision that explain its perenniality ; - to examine whate kind of relations excision (or its renunciation) maintains, with a series of factors (school attendance, ethnies mingling, social status, etc. ). In the first part of this research, we present the populations examined, their social structure and the conditions of the study. The second part deals with the meaning and the evolution of excision in the societies where modernity is marked by the development of the mass-media and population mingling ; and with the rush of excision in the immigration surroundings where it had never been practised before and where it is producing a culture schock. The last part emphasizes reflections about changes and prospects in the practice of excision.

L'objectif de cette these est d'etudier la nouvelle reinterpretation a laquelle est soumise l'operation (acte chirurgical) dans l'ensemble des representations relatives a l'excision qui explique la perennite, d'analyser quel genre de relations entretient l'excision (ou son abandon) avec une serie de facteurs (scolarisation, brassage ethnique, statut social, etc. ). Cette etude comprend une premiere partie ou sont presentees les populations etudiees, les conditions de l'enquete et l'organisation sociale des societes en question. La deuxieme partie s'attache au sens de l'evolution dans les societes, ou la modernite est marquee par le developpement des moyens de communications et un brassage des populations, et a l'irruption en milieu migratoire ou elle n'a jamais ete pratiquee et provoque un choc de culture. La derniere partie porte sur la reflexion, les changements et les perspectives quant a la pratique de l'excision.
