Summary : the study of the social and political organisation of afar society aims to provide a systematic description of the norms and cultural values of this people. In this work it is observed that this society has a strong sense of belonging to one particular ethnic community with respect to a common language, lifestyle and law (madqa). A further observation is that the socio-cultural aspect of afar society is largely autonomous. For thousands of year, this society has undergone periods of change. Of these changes, two are worth noting. Firstly, there is the transition of a "stateless" society to one that is organised hierarchically in terms of sultanates. Secondly, changes occured with respect to the socio-political structures based on traditional rules and ancestral regulations which were engrained both in the mentality of the population as a whole and in each of its individual members. In contrast to the widely held opinion, afar society is characterised by a strong sense of unity, both with respect to social and economic structure,as well as with respect to the cultural values and ecological surroundings in which the afar people live.

Resume : l'etude de l'organisation sociale et politique des afar a pour objet une description systematique des normes et des valeurs culturelles de la societe afar. On constatera que cette societe a un sentiment aigue d'appartenance a une meme communaute ethnique : unite de la langue, du mode de vie et respect d'une meme institution ; la madqa (la loi). On verra qu'il existe une dimension socioculturelle afar dont l'histoire est largement autonome. Pendant des millenaires, cette societe a franchi quelques seuils de changements, notamment le passage d'une societe sans etat a une societe hierarchisee avec des sultanats. Au niveau des structures sociopolitiques on se trouve devant une societe fondees sur des regles coutumieres ancestrales et tres ancrees dans la mentalite de tout individu. A l'encontre d'un large eventail d'idees recues, les afar s'illustrent par une tres grande unite ; des systemes sociaux et economiques (rapports hierarchiques coherents avec de fortes tendances egalitaires), des valeurs culturelles et des milieux ecologiques dans lesquels ils vivent.
