This study of the mono-alu society (solomon islands) is based on data from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, especially on an ethnographic manuscript by the british anthropologist g. C. Wheeler. The analysis of the social structure, myths, rituals, exchanges and mono-alu language reveals a fundamental structure based on the hierarchical opposition between two distinct forms of the notion of nitu (which can be glossed as "ancestor"). This basic distinction accounts for an opposition between two series of vernacular notions which this society uses to think, describe, understand and act upon the universe as well as the society thus, the rituals, including the life-cycle rituals can be described along some basic principles which organise and account for spatio temporal movements. Some of the key notions of this society are actuated by a permanent rhythmic movement, which often takes the shape of a loop and which is related both to the notion of nitu and to this spatio temporal conceptualisation. The study of the internal exchanges of the mono-alu society was the foundation for a study of the relationships between this society and some buin (bougainville island) societies. These exchanges and the making of traditional shell money are interrelated with rituals as well as raids. This, in turn opens up new perspectives for the understanding of the relationships with choiseul island and between several societies of the north western solomons.

Cette etude de la societe de mono-alu (iles salomon) est realisee a partir de nombreux documents datant de la fin du 19e et du debut du 20e siecle, en particulier un manuscrit ethnographique de l'ethnologue britannique g. C. Wheeler. L'analyse de la structure sociale, des mythes, des rites, des echanges et de la langue de mono-alu revele une structuration fondamentale articulee autour de l'opposition hierarchique de deux aspects contrastes de la notion de nitu (qu'on peut traduire ici par "ancetre). Cette opposition en definit une autre, entre deux series de notions vernaculaires qui sont mises en oeuvre par la societe pour penser, decrire, comprendre et agir sur l'univers et la societe. Les rituels, y compris les rites du cycle de vie, peuvent etre decrits grace a quelques principes fondamentaux qui organisent et decrivent des deplacements spatiaux et temporels. Certaines des notions cles de cette societe sont animees d'un mouvement rythme permanent qui prend souvent la forme d'une boucle; mouvement qui est permis par un aspect de la notion de nitu et sous-tendu par cette conceptualisation spatio-temporelle. L'etude des echanges internes de la societe de mono-alu a servi de base pour une etude des relations de cette societe avec les societes de buin (ile de bougainville). Ces echanges combinent travail rituel interne, fabrication et ou echange de monnaies de coquillage et raids. Ceci ouvre des perspectives pour la comprehension des relations avec l'ile de choiseul et toute une serie de societes du nord-ouest des iles salomon.
