Abstract EN:

This project deals with the socio-cultural role played by societies of musicin the construction of the urban milieu and the modernization of campos dos goitacazes (to the north of the state of rio the janeiro). Throughout this period one encounters a strong presence of musical associations who are integrated in the process of organizing political representation of professional groups and in the construction of new social identities. A study of these musical groups can help to illuminate the specific nature both of the meetings that took place within societies of music headquarters as well as the outcome of these meetings, which frequently permeated into society at large. Part i provides the reader with the definition, internal structure and typology of the musical ensembles, whose aim is to reveal particularities of the musical instruments used, the modes that differentiated the societies from other musical groups, and their function both as free music schools and differentiated sociability spaces. Part 11 attempts to highlight contextual specificities linked to the groups' rehearsals and performances that expressed a quest for modernity and urbanism and represented a reference point from which both continuities and transformations can be observed. Part 111 shows how participation in the process of construction of modernity influences the manners by which individuals learn and redefine their identity within that of a larger group. Viewed in this light, the musicians can be seen as actors who are fully engaged in the creation of a new urban culture ; and who function simultaneously as essential agents in the construction of a city's dynamic identity. Throughout, the societies of music are studied within the context of a wide range of social groups, allowing one to perceive the manners by which the former integrate into the urban fabric, and at the same time, render it dynamic.
