In the reunionese society, marked by the systems of slavery, then enlisting and, eventually the status as a french <departement>, the diachronic study on the choice of a spouse enables to highlight the way this society grounded on a violent disintegration of the individuals, as well as of the system of family ties formerly in force in the different original social groups became structured on the basis of different matrimonial practices. The particularity of those practices, when choosing a spouse lies in the importance given to the geographical nearness at the expense of the ethnical endogamyor of the social and religious homogamy. This research, which is based on an exhaustive survey of actual marriages in a town on the west coast of the island, first aims at evaluating the reality of an ancient family structure which was already underlying at the time of slavery. Its second aim is to throw into relief the relevant elements in the making of couples. The high incidence and the persistence of a choice unrelated to the ethnic group seem to be, among the various groups of immigrants, elements which have given birth to the particular and linguistic formations that are a characteristic feature of the reunionese society. Similary, the irrelevance of racial or colour criteria for the choice of a partner, beyond the variety of talk and the ideological assumptions, sets the studied society apart from other creole and island areas.

L'étude diachronique du choix du conjoint dans la société réunionnaise, marquée par l'esclavage puis l'engagisme et enfin la départementalisation, permet de mettre en évidence la manière dont cette société basée sur une destructuration violente des individus et des systèmes de parente en vigueur dans les différentes sociétés d'origine s'est structurée à partir de pratiques matrimoniales se caractérisant par l'importance lors du choix du conjoint de la proximité géographique aux dépens d'une endogamie ethnique ou d'une homogamie sociale et religieuse s'appuyant sur une étude exhaustive des mariages effectifs dans une commune de l'Ouest de l'île, cette recherche s'attache ainsi dans un premier temps à évaluer la réalité d'une structuration familiale ancienne puisque déjà latente à l'époque de l'esclavage et ensuite a mettre en relief les éléments déterminants dans la formation des couples. La fréquence et la permanence d'un choix en dehors du groupe ethnique au sein des divers groupes d'immigrants apparaissent comme des données à l'origine de formations culturelles et linguistiques originales, caractéristiques de la société réunionnaise. De même, la non-pertinence de critères raciaux ou coloristes lors du choix du conjoint - par delà la diversité des discours et les a priori idéologiques - distingue la société étudiée d'autres espaces créoles et insulaires.
