This thesis analyses the history of chiapas, mexico, from the spanish conquest to the 1712 great indian rebellion, with emphasis on the transformation in the organisation of space. The organisation of space is analysed from several dimensions (ecological, linguistic, political, administrative, religious, demographic and economic, tributary, mutual help relationships, and insurgent). Separate chapters, one for each one of these dimensions, look at the history of the social organisation of space from a different perspective. The thesis shows how the internal logic of each of these dimensions is disturbed by irreducible historical accidents.

Cette these analyse l'histoire du chiapas, mexique, depuis la conquete espagnole jusqu'a la grande rebellion indienne survenue en l'an de 1712, en s'attachant de pres aux transformations survenues dan l'organisation de l'espace. Chaque chapitre de la these etudie l'histoire d'un espace social different -- ecologique, linguistique, politique, administratif, religieux, demographique et economique, tributaire, d'entraide, et rebelle --, pour tenter, dans chaque cas, de mettre en evidence sa logique interne et les irreductibles accidents historiques qui lui ont donne forme.
