This thesis questions through history, social practices and politics the diversifivation of the links of identity of the Pramalai Kallar sub-caste in central Tamil Nadu in order to grasp what constitues belonging to a birth group in contemporary India. The reconstitution of the Pramalai Kallar' sociological landscape is necessary to understand the nature and the structure of belonging, by locating and distinguishing precisely three interrelated morphosociological categories: the caste and the caste-cluster. Through ethnographic inquiry, historiographical and political data, we identify the ressources of collective identification which contribute to the reproduction, the regulation and the promotion of belonging to the borth group(s). Therefore, in the wider context of transformation of Indian society, it is necessary to grasp the contemporary parameters which modify, fragilise or renforce differentiated registers of belonginig "caste".

Cette thèse questionne à travers l'histoire, les pratiques sociales et la politique la diversification des accroches identitaires des Pramali Kallars du Tamil Nadu, afin de saisir ce que constitue l'appartenance à un groupe de naissance dans l'Inde contemporaine. La reconstitution du paysage sociologique s'avère nécessaire pour saisir la nature et la structure de l'appartenance, en localisant et en distinguant trois catégories morphosociologiques: sous-caste/caste/méta-caste. A partir d'enquêtes ethnographiques, de matériaux historiographiques et politiques, nous identifions les ressources identitaires collectives mobilisées dans les discours et les pratiques qui contribuent à la reproduction, voire la régulation, et la promotion de l'appartenance aux groupes de naissance. Dans le contexte plus large de transformation de la société indienne il est nécessaire de cerner la nature des enjeux contemporains qui modifient, fragilisent ou renforcent des registres d'appartenance à la "caste".
