This thesis intends to understand the way the Polish society has adapted to the transformations of its social environment, transformations due to its entry into modernity. Previously closely associated with the USSR, Poland has "reconnected" itself to the western societies since 1989. However this "reconnection" was only possible after a complete restructuring of the society, which caused as well ideological changes. The aim of this study is to understand how Polish people adapt and reconfigure their perceptions of the world according to these changes. Funeral practices were considered as the major entry to approach the question of social change. Making obvious the social and cosmological ideals of a population, they are particularly interesting to understand the ways a society perceives its environment and interacts with it Considered in a historical perspective, funeral practices have offered to the research worker the possibility to understand the logic through which the changes of perception of this new social reality occur.

Cette étude s'attache à comprendre comment la société polonaise, récemment entrée dans la modernité, s'adapte aux transformations de son environnement. Auparavant intégrée à l'URSS, la Pologne s'est « rebranchée » (Amselle, 2001) depuis 1989 sur le monde occidental. Ce « rebranchement » n'a été possible qu'au prix d'une refonte complète de la société qui en plus de générer d'importants changements sociaux, a également marqué un changement de cap idéologique. Il est donc question ici de savoir comment les Polonais s'adaptent et remanient leurs perceptions du monde en fonction de ces changements. Les pratiques funéraires ont ici constitué l'entrée majeure à partir de laquelle la question du changement social a été traitée. Faisant intervenir les idéaux sociaux et cosmologiques d'un groupe, elles s'avèrent être un objet d'étude privilégié pour comprendre les façons dont une société perçoit et agit sur son environnement. Envisagées dans une perspective historique, elles ont offert au chercheur la possibilité de mettre en évidence les logiques à travers lesquelles s'opèrent les changements de perception des nouvelles réalités sociales.
