Abstract EN:

The development of expenditure on education during the long phases of economic depression continued from the nineteenth century until the inter-war period. Subsequently, the educational situation ceased to be countercyclical and a direct relation took the place of the inverse relation. Works in quantitative history provide information on the process of correction of economic blockages by the development of education, but do not a priori provide information about the contradictory process that grew within the general situation and led to the reversal of the inter-war period. The hypothesis is put forward that the reversal was the result of a progressive autonomist process resulting from the exhaustion and overtaking of the relation between education and economics established during the industrial revolution.

Abstract FR:

Le developpement de la depense d'education au cours des longues phases de depression economique se reproduit du 19eme siecle jusque dans l'entre-deux-guerres. Par la suite, la conjoncture educative cesse d'etre contra-cyclique : une relation directe se substitue a la relation inverse. Les travaux d'histoire quantitative nous renseignent sur le processus de correction des blocages economiques par le developpement de l'education mais ne nous renseignent pas a priori sur le processus contradictoire qui grandit au sein du processus general et aboutit au renversement de l'entre-deux-guerres. Nous emettons l'hypothese que ce renversement resulte d'un processus d'autonomisation, progressif, traduisant l'epuisement et le depassement de la relation education economie, etablie dans la revolution industrielle.
