El Anatsui, un artiste ghanéen : des connexions locales aux interprétations globales

This Ph. D. Proposes a study about the work of Ghanaian artist El Anatsui, international figure, awarded at many times, but not yet studied in France. So this is a monograph intending to produce some answers regarding the conditions of production and reception of contemporary African art, nationally and internationally. The challenge is to understand the transformation of the artist from a local apprehension to a global reception. With the support of the field survey, conducted in 2011 and the many personal interviews with the artist, the study explores three main themes. The first chapter presents the biography of the artist as a contextual line of thought that inspires his art. The second chapter studies tha fundamental place of history, in the approach of El Anatsui. Finally, the third chapter questions the paradigm shift in his sculptural practice, inflected by the internationalization of his works.

Cette thèse propose un travail de réflexion autour de l’œuvre de l’artiste ghanéen El Anatsui, figure internationale, primé à de nombreuses reprises, mais pas encore étudié en France. Il s’agit donc d’une monographie, qui entend produire des éléments de réponse concernant les conditions de production et de réception de l’art africain contemporain, à l’échelle nationale et internationale. L’enjeu est de comprendre les mécanismes qui font passer un artiste d’une appréhension locale à une réception globale. Avec l’appui de l’enquête de terrain menée en 2011 et les nombreux entretiens personnels avec l’artiste, l’étude explore trois grandes thématiques. Le premier chapitre expose la biographie de l’artiste en tant que piste contextuelle ayant inspiré son art. Le deuxième chapitre étudie la place fondamentale de l’histoire dans la démarche intellectuelle d’El Anatsui. Enfin, le troisième chapitre interroge le changement de paradigme dans sa pratique sculpturale, infléchi par l’internationalisation de ses œuvres.
