Through the transcription, classification and analysis of the preparatory manuscripts for the Salammbô text, it has been possible to trace the genesis of the female character. This thesis discusses the methods used, referred to as "textual genetics", and directs the interpretative study of the autograph documents towards a demonstration of the dynamic writing process, pinpointing the deliberate changes made to deletions, corrections and textual shifts. Six volumes comprising 709 "diplomatically transcribed" folios are devoted to the heroine. They are placed in evolutionary order with tables provided as an aid. An examination of the drafts, which state precisely what the author wants the reader to guess at, throws a new light on the text by justifying the hypotheses which, without the support of these manuscript pages, might seem gratuitous at times. The myths and legends that prevailed at the genesis of Salammbô appear in the margins and additions between the lines of text, until being adeptly concealed by Flaubert. After the chapter-by-chapter commentary, the discoveries made in the drafts make it easier to sketch the dual nature of Salammbô, an enigmatic figure hovering between dream and reality. Archaeological and historical knowledge, memories of literary types, as well as elements of the author's life and own imaginary universe are caught up in this metamorphic cauldron which leads to the creation of the character in the illusion of writing.

La transcription, le classement et l'analyse des manuscrits préparatoires de Salammbô a permis de retracer la genèse du personnage féminin. Cette thèse précise les méthodes utilisées, celles de la "génétique textuelle", et oriente l'étude interprétative des documents autographes vers la mise en évidence du processus dynamique de l'écriture, cernant au plus près l'évolution volontaire des suppressions, corrections et déplacements. Six volumes présentent 709 folios consacrés à l'héroi͏̈ne, en transcription "diplomatique", placés en ordre génétique, que des tableaux aident à suivre. L'examen des brouillons, qui disent nettement ce que l'auteur veut faire deviner au lecteur, apporte une connaissance renouvelée du texte en justifiant les hypothèses qui, sans le recours à ces pages manuscrites, peuvent parfois sembler gratuites. Les mythes et légendes qui ont présidé à la naissance de Salammbô apparaissent dans les marges et les ajouts interlinéaires avant que Flaubert ne les masque habilement. Après le commentaire par chapitre, les découvertes faites dans les brouillons permettent d'esquisser le double caractère de Salammbô, figure énigmatique entre rêve et réalité.
