While the 'blanc' ('white') of the page - the main part of Mallarmé's writing - has been staying unknown in the occidental culture fed with the alphabetic writing, the extreme-oriental aesthetics based on the significance of the support's 'blanc' - heritage of the ideographic writing system (the character unit writing) - supplies the essential elements for the 'blanc's' lecture. Mallarmé has created its poetics with roman alphabetic writing thanks to his perspicacity, obtained in the search for a new verse in front of the paper: he discovered the emergence of the 'blanc' in his epoch's printing and painting - a result of a long evolution of the alphabetic culture toward its ideographic source. With the analysis of “Un coup de dés” in this historical and comparative perspective, we will arrive at the 'blanc' which underlies an impersonal and virtual structure of the spatial rhythm made from the words and their place.

Alors que le blanc de la page chez Mallarmé reste pendant longtemps ignoré dans la culture occidentale culture de l'écriture alphabétique -, l'esthétique extrême-orientale, fondée sur la prééminence du blanc du support héritée du système d'écriture idéographique, offre les éléments essentiels pour la lecture de ce blanc. Mallarmé a réalisé une poétique du blanc avec l'écriture à alphabet romain grâce à sa perspicacité révélée dans la quête d'un nouveau vers devant le papier : il a découvert l'émergence du blanc dans le domaine de l'impression et de la peinture de son époque qui est le résultat d'une longue évolution de la culture alphabétique vers un retour aux sources idéographiques. L'analyse du blanc des œuvres mallarméenne, surtout d' « UN COUP DE DÉS », peut être faite dans cette perspective historique et comparatiste. Le blanc soutient et sous-tend chez Mallarmé la notion d'œuvre comme structure impersonnelle et virtuelle du rythme spatial des mots et de leur place.
