This thesis aims to explore how ISO 14001 (EMS) led to improved environmental performance of companies. In particular, this research aims both to understand how companies integrate the EMS in their daily management, and secondly to identify the factors driving the move towards improved environmental performance. To guide our analysis we used a theoretical framework based on two theoretical concepts namely, knowledge creation and organizational learning. This theoretical approach has allowed us to clarify the role of organizational learning in integrating the environmental dimension in corporate behaviour. The results of this research show the standard ISO 14001 is an effective tool that leads to improved environmental performance through two main factors, the assimilation of environmental practices in the daily tasks of employees and the adoption of cleaner technologies. Empirical tests validate partially the predictions of the theoretical model. The first chapter is devoted to a review of literature on ISO 14001. The second chapter presents the theoretical framework mobilized in this research. The third chapter elaborates the analysis of the EMS in light of our theoretical approach. The fourth chapter presents the theoretical model and empirical test of model predictions on a sample of 34 Algerian companies certified ISO 14001

Cette thèse a pour objectif d’étudier dans quelle mesure la norme ISO 14001 (SME) conduit à l’amélioration des performances environnementales des entreprises. En particulier, cette recherche vise d’une part à comprendre comment les entreprises intègrent le SME dans leurs gestions, et d’autre part à identifier les facteurs qui emmènent à l’amélioration des performances environnementales. Pour guider notre analyse nous avons mobilisé un cadre théorique qui s’appuie principalement sur deux concepts théoriques à savoir, la création des connaissances et l’apprentissage organisationnel. Cette approche théorique nous a permis d’éclairer le rôle de l'apprentissage organisationnel dans l’intégration de la dimension environnementale dans le comportement des entreprises. Les résultats de cette recherche montrent que la norme ISO 14001 est un outil efficace pour améliorer les performances environnementales à travers deux principaux facteurs, l’assimilation des pratiques environnementales dans les tâches quotidiennes des employés et l’adoption de technologies plus propres. Des tests empiriques valident partiellement les prédictions du modèle théorique. Le premier chapitre est consacré à une revue de littérature portant sur la norme ISO 14001. Le deuxième chapitre présente le cadre théorique mobilisé dans cette recherche. Le troisième chapitre approfondit l’analyse du SME sous la lumière de notre approche théorique. Le quatrième chapitre propose le modèle théorique et le test empirique des prédictions du modèle sur un échantillon de 34 entreprises algériennes certifiées ISO 14001
