The question of the relation between the christian faith and the cultures of mankind may be said to be as old as the church. Notlong ago, however, a new word, a neologism "inculturation" made its appearance in missiological discussions. An effort must be made to clarify what is meant when this word is used. It is generally understood as the effort to adapt the christian message to the way of thinking and ac-ting non-occidental peoples. It differs from acculturation, which is in cultural anthropology defined as the encounter with a culture other than one's own. It refers to the dynamic relation between the local church and "its own culture", i. E. The culture of its own people. Finally, "the inculturation of the church is the integration of christian ex-perience of a local church into the culture of its people, in such a way that this experience not only expresses itself in elements of this culture, but becomes a force that animates, orients and innovates this culture so as to create a new unity and communion, not only within the culture in question, but also as an enrichment of the church uni-versal". This notion of inculturation does not concern only the "young churches", but also for instance the catholic church in france.

On peut dire que la relation entre la foi chretienne et les cultures de l'humanite est aussi vieille que l'eglise. Il n'y a pas longtemps, cependant, un nouveau mot, un neologisme "inculturation" est apparu dans des discussions relatives a la missiologie. Un effort doit etre fait pour voir ce que ce mot signifie. On le comprend en general comme l'effort d'adaptation du message chretien aux modes de pensee et d'action des peuples non-occidentaux. Il differe de l'acculturation qui designe dans l'anthropologie culturelle la rencontre avec une autre culture que la sienne propre. Il renvoie a la relation dynamique entre l'eglise locale et sa propre culture, c'est-a-dire la culture de son peuple. Finalement, "l'inculturation est l'integration de l'experience chretienne d'une eglise locale dans la culture du peuple qui la constitue, de telle maniere que cette experience s'exprime dans des elements de cette culture, mais devient, a l'interieur de cette culture, une force qui l'anime, l'oriente et la renouvelle, de facon a creer une nouvelle cohesion et communion, non seulement dans la culture en question, mais aussi comme un enrichissement de l'eglise universelle". Cette notion d'inculturation ne concerne pas seulement les "jeunes eglises", mais aussi, par exemple, l'eglise catholique en france.
