L'écriture de l'histoire de la Compagnie de Jésus : l'oeuvre bibliographique de Carlos Sommervogel (1890-1932)

The Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus, published in 1890-1932, is regarded as the summit of the bibliographical work of the French Jesuit Carlos Sommervogel. It is an indispensable reference book for all those who take an interest in the accomplishments of Jesuit writers. It is also seen as a central link of the long “chain” of Jesuit bibliographies, from the beginning of the Society of Jesus until the present time. As well these works are only part of Jesuit historiography, to study their origins and development makes possible an approach to historiography in general and Jesuit historiography in particular. Such is the purpose of this thesis which, along with a summary of the history of the Bibliothèque, puts forward a historiographic reinterpretation of Sommervogel’s work and shows its place in the larger context or religious historiography at that time.

La Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus, publiée dans les années 1890-1932, constitue le sommet de l’œuvre bibliographique du jésuite français Carlos Sommervogel. Elle est une référence obligatoire pour tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’activité littéraire des jésuites. Elle apparaît aussi comme le maillon central d’une « chaîne » de bibliographies depuis le début de la Compagnie jusqu’à nos jours. Puisque toutes ces bibliographies ne représentent qu’une partie de l’écriture de l’histoire de l’Ordre, l’étude de leur élaboration rend possible une approche à l’historiographie en général et à celle de la Compagnie en particulier. Tel est le but de cette thèse qui retrace l’histoire de la Bibliothèque et propose une relecture « historiographique » de cet ouvrage, tout en montrant comment il s’inscrit dans le contexte plus large de l’historiographie religieuse de l’époque.
