This doctoral dissertaion consists of a new translation of Plotinus'Ennaed IV, 3 (27) provided with notes, a running commentary and an introduction. The structura of the dissertation follows the model provided by Pierre Hadot in the series of Plotinus translations which he founded with the publisher Editions du Cerf (Ecrits de Plotin). This new translation, which divides Plotinus' text into sections and provides it with marginal summaries, is based on a very close analysis of the Greek text and takes into account the various translations available in modern languages. The copious footnotes to the translation deal with problems pertaining to the Greek text - especially question concerning grammatical structures and vocabulary - offers alternative possibilities for translation and points out Plotinus' sources. The introduction represents an attempt to determine the overall significance of Ennead IV, 3 (27), to situate it in the context of Plotinus' Ouevre as whole, to outline its structure, the philosophical methods employed and to identify Plotinus'interlocutors. Furthermore, a large section of the introduction is devoted to the analysis of ten fundamental philosophical problems which arise in the context of Ennead IV, 3 (27). Finally, the commentary, which follows the exact order of Plotinus' text provides a philosophical interpretation of Ennead IV, 3 (27) in totality.

"Cette thèse consiste en une nouvelle traduction du Traité 27 de Plotin (Enneade IV, 3) accompagnée de notes, d'un commentaire continu et d'une introduction. Nous avons suivi la structure adoptée par Pierre Hadot dans la collection aux "Ecrits de Plotin" qu'il dirige aux Editions du Cerf. Cette nouvelle traduction du traité 27, qui divise le texte en diverses sections et s'accompagne de gloses en marge, se fonde sur une analyse minutieuse du texte grec et tient également compte des diverses traductions disponibles en langues modernes. Les notes à la traduction, abondantes, soulignent les problèmes que pose le texte grec - notamment les questions concernant les structures grammaticales et le vocabulaire utilisé - présentent les diverses possibilités de traductions, indiquent les sources de Plotin de même que les textes parallèles. L'introduction vise pour sa part à élucider le sens du traité 27, à déterminer la place de ce traité dans l'oeuvre de Plotin, à présenter sa structure, les méthodes philosophiques employées, et à identifier les interlocuteurs de l'Alexandrin. Elle contient également une section où sont analysées dix thèmes fondamentaux qui résument les plus importantes positions philosophiques du traité. Finalement, le commentaire, qui respecte l'ordre exact du discours de Plotin, offre une interprétation philosophique du traité 27 dans son intégralité. "
