Spécialisation sectorielle, demande non homothétique et bien-être : les fondements microéconomiques de la loi d'Engel

The estimation of imports and exports functions highlights non unitary income elasticities. The first part of the thesis analyzes the way in which this stylized fact can be interpreted and modeled. Two main interpretations can be distinguished in the literature. We prefer the explanation based on demand behaviors (Engel's law) than the approach in terms of intra-industrial differenciation. We also analyze the structure of North-South exchanges and establish a relation between the level of development of a country and the type of its sector specialisations. In the second part of the thesis, we propose a model of international trade of ricardian inspiration which integrates a non homothetic demand function and establishes a correspondence between the type of country specializations and the evolution of its external demand. It results from it that the type of specialization has direct effects on welfare.

L'estimation des fonctions d'importations et d'exportations met en évidence des élasticités-revenu de la demande non unitaires. La première partie de la thèse analyse la façon dont ce fait stylisé peut être interprété et modélisé. A l'approche en termes d'évolution de la composition de l'offre, nous préférons une explication fondée sur les comportements de demande (loi d'Engel). Nous analysons également la structure des échanges nord-sud et établissons une relation entre le niveau de développement d'un pays et la nature de ses spécialisations. Dans la seconde partie de la thèse, nous proposons un modèle de commerce international d'inspiration classsique qui intègre une fonction de demande non homothétique et qui établit une correspondance entre la nature des spécialisations d'un pays et l'évolution de sa demande extérieure. Il en résulte que le type de spécialisation sectorielle a des répercussions directes sur le bien-être.
