The thesis presents a translation of the volume i of mario untersteiner's italian book : i sofisti, which concerns protagoras and gorgias. This translation is preceded by some notes on life and work of the author, an introduction, anpreliminary chapter on thettranslated book and a preface and foot notes about the translation. The introduction points out the different interpretations of the sophists in the antiquity, peculiarly those of plato and aristotle, and examines the modern valuations since the 19th century, showing that they are tributaries of the ancient interpretation, which, in fact have constituded the sophistic movement as we know it. The presentation of the translated work points out mario untersteiner's personal point of view with respect to precedent rehabilitations, specially on his own use of interpretation and replaces the work within the controversial discussions produced by the book. The translator preface points out some investigations performed after those of mario untersteiner, and for which the book translated is of a great interest because it makes a complete restatement of the question up to 1967. The preface connects three notions : language, politics and kairos, this latter is sehowed as the convergent point of the first two notions. A bibliography of mario untersteiner's concludes the thesis.

La these presente une traduction du volume i de l'ouvrage italien de mario untersteiner : i sofisti, relatif a protagoras et a gorgias. Cette traduction est precedee de quelques remarques concernant la vie et l'oeuvre de l'auteur, d'une introduction, d'une presentation de l'ouvrage traduit et d'une preface dutraducteur, et est accompagne de notes de traduction. L'introduction degage les diverses interpretations qu'ont subies les sophistes dans l'antiquite, en particulier celles de platon et d'aristote, puis suit les reevaluations modernes a partir du xixeme siecle montrant comment celles-ci sont redevables aux lecteurs anciennes qui, de fait, ont constitue le mouvement sophistique tel que nous le connaissons. La presentation de l'ouvrage traduit met en relief l'originalite de la lecture de m. Untersteiner par rapport aux rehabilitations anterieures, en particulier par l'usage qu'il fait de l'interpretation et, tente de mettre en perspective cette lecture dans la polemique qu'elle a suscite a la publication de l'ouvrage. La preface du traducteur tente d'indiquer quelques lignes de recherches posterieures a celles de m. Untersteiner et pour lesquelles l'etude de m. Untersteiner a permis une mise au point exhaustie ve concernant l'etat de la question jusqu'a 1967. La preface s'articule autour de trois notions : le language, la politique et le kairos, ce dernier apparaissant comle point de convergence des deux premiers. Enfin, une bibliographie des travaux de m. Untersteiner complete cet ensemble.
