Since the end of the 1960's a line of research, using the instruments of mathematical economics to study other functioning of modern democracies has developed. The object of the first part of this work is to outline the foundations of and the main results obtained by this approach. The following section aims at exploring in more detail certain aspects of this research. A model is presented which allows one to analyse the phenomena of vote exchange and to discuss the normative properties of this type of phenomena. The scope is then broadened in order to tackle the huge problem of the formation of social groups. After a summary of the existing results on the approaches to this question in terms of non-cooperative games, a result is proved enabling one to give conditions for the existence of an equilibrium.

Depuis la fin des annees soixante, s'est developpe un courant de recherche, visant a etudier le fonctionnement des democraties actuelles a l'aide des outils de l'economie mathematiques. Ce travail se propose, dans une premiere partie, d'exposer les fondements et les principaux resultats obtenus par cette approche. La partie suivante se propose d'explorer plus en details certains aspects. On y presente un modele permettant d'etudier les phenomenes d'echanges de votes et de discuter les proprietes normatives de ce type de phenomenes. Le propos s'elargit ensuite pour aborder le vaste probleme de la formation des groupes sociaux. Apres un rappel des resultats existant sur l'approche de cette question en termes de jeux non cooperatifs, on demontre un resultat permettant de donner des conditions d'existence d'un equilibre.
