Music takes an important place in Congolese life. Songs are the genuine driving force of all social and economic activities, and as such, they have to be understood as expressing the Congolese thought. They are deeply rooted in the folklore of the peoples. The imaginary and the collective utopia are dealt with by the Congolese singer who discloses his soul, asks for advice and gives some if need be. Not only does the singer benefit from such an exercise, but his fellow creatures as well. It befalls him to advise, educate, recall the principles of wisdom to build a better life. From 1950 to 1980, the artist together with his audience and the political power have joined in or broken apart dependind on circumstances. But the artist has kept in mind that "caring for oneself" has always been the goal.

Le Congo est le théâtre d'une intense activité d'expression musicale. Le chant, véritable moteur de toute activité socio-économique, s'appréhende comme la manifestation expressive de la pensée congolaise. Dans son origine populaire, il provient des folklores des peuples. Prenant en charge l'imaginaire et l'utopie collective, le chanteur congolais expose l'état de son âme, sollicite des conseils, en donne à celui qui en a besoin. Cet exercice n'est pas seulement bénéfique pour lui mais aussi pour autrui. Son devoir et son droit est celui de conseiller, d'éduquer, de rappeler les principes de sagesse pour une vie meilleure. De 1950 à 1980, l'artiste, le public et le pouvoir entretiennent un rapport tantôt de conjonction tantôt de disjonction. Le "souci de soi" de l'artiste est de tous les instants.
