Abstract EN:

A unique combination of philosophical speculation and literary fiction allows the yogavasistha to develop a vision of personal identity, which does not limit itself to a traditional conceptual analysis. The presence of narratives legitimates the representation of the fluctuations of identity through the description of metamorphoses. This reveals a multiple identity which is related, beyond its actual reality, to otherness and to the totality of possibilities offered to the individual. The mind and creative imagination play a key role in this process which results in the interconnection and the non-difference between all individual selves. Thus, the staging of the metamorphoses manifests the existence of an intermediary space between the reduction of the 'i' to a contingent empirical reality (as an ego) and its accession to the status of an absolute reality (as the self). This distance to oneself already paves the way to liberation.

Abstract FR:

Un equilibre inedit entre la speculation philosophique et la fiction litteraire permet au yogavasistha de developper une vision de l'identite personnelle qui ne se limite pas a l'analyse conceptuelle classique. La presence de recits legitime la representation des fluctuations de l'identite a travers la description de metamorphoses. On assiste alors au deploiement d'une identite multiple qui, au-dela de sa realite presente, inclut le rapport a l'alterite et a l'ensemble des virtualites constitutives du moi. L'esprit et l'imagination creatrice jouent un role moteur dans ce processus qui debouche sur l'interconnexion et la non-difference entre les consciences. La mise en scene des metamorphoses manifeste ainsi l'existence d'un espace intermediaire entre la reduction du moi a une realite empirique contingente (en tant qu'ego) et son accession au rang d'une realite absolue (en tant que soi). Dans cet ecart, s'ouvre deja la voie de la delivrance.
