The problem of matter has given us the opportunity to examine the role of alterity and, at the same time, the place of negativity, in the philosophical system of plotinus. We were interested in the conditions under which the emergence of a first and initial difference from the one was possible, plotinus'strategy consisting in this context of maintaining, in a contradictory fashion, that there is no common term beetween the one and the other realities notwihtstanding the fact that the one is the source of all things. With intelligible matter---a doctrine that plotinus inherited from aristotle and that he believed is platonic---though arose the problem of potentiality, and accordingly the possible existence of "becoming" and "change" emerged and threatened the existence itself or the intelligible as archetype for the sensible world. We examined finally the role of sensible matter, which means the alterity itself, from an ontological and a cosmological point of view, and we have seen here also that plotinus required, in a contradictory way, that matter be and not be reducible to the good, his first principle, and showed with what difficulty he finally generated this anti-principle that matter in his system represents.

Le probleme de la matiere nous a permis d'examiner le role de l'alterite, et par la, la place de la negativite, a l'interieur du systeme philosophique de plotin. Nous nous sommes interesse aux conditions de possibilite d'emergence d'une premiere et initiale difference a partir de l'un, la strategie de plotin etant ici de maintenir, et ce de facon contradictoire, qu'il n'y a pas de terme commun entre l'un et les autres choses en depit du fait que l'un soit la source de toutes les autres choses. Avec la matiere intelligible--- doctrine que plotin herite d'aristote et qu'il croit platonicienne--- c'est le probleme de la potentialite, et donc la perspective du devenir et du changement, que nous avons vu faire irruption dans le monde des idees et en menacer l'existence meme comme archetype du monde sensible. Nous avons examine enfin le role de la matiere sensible, c'est-a-dire de l'alterite-en-soi, d'un point de vue ontologique et cosmologique, et nous avons vu qu'ici aussi plotin exigeait, de facon contradic- toire, que la matiere soit et ne soit pas reductible au bien, son premier principe, et montre avec quelle difficulte celui-ci finissait par engendrer cette sorte d'anti-principe qu'incarne la matiere dans son systeme.
