The thesis analyses the distance covered by the work of julian beck in the living theatre. The argument is that beck's concept of modern art manifests itself throughtout his work of art until the theater. The thesis includes an appendix; the translation into french of the last notebooks of julian beck, entitled theandric (from the greek theos and andros), reassembled by himself between 1982 and 1983. 1) end of world war ii; two major influences lead to the foundation of the living theatre, in 1947, the abstract expressionism chool of new york and erwin piscator workshop. Julian beck goes throught the frame of the painting to the frame of the stage. (1945-1963) 2) the voluntary exile throught europe produces an effect of estrangement. The living theatre cerates collectively as style of acting where the physical engagement of the actor is driven to the extremes throught an alienation effect. The living theatre is an experimental society. (1966-1968) 3) the legacy of cain is an ensemble of plays on the themes of power, money, property and revolutionary changes in direction of non specifically theatrical places. The living theatre completes his vocabulary of the movement by studying meyerhold's biomecanics. (1968 - 1978).

La these analyse la parcours de l'oeuvre de julian beck dans le living theatre de 1945 a 1985, articule en trois periodes. L'hypothese est que la conception de l'oeuvre d'art manifestee par julian beck est celle du peintre. La these comporte en annexe, la traduction en francais des derniers carnets de j. Beck, rassembles en 1982 et 1983, sous le titre de theandrique; du grec theos et andros. 1) fin de la iie guerre mondiale; deux influences majeures : l'ecole abstraite expressionniste de new york et le seminaire d'erwin piscator. En 1947, fondation du living theatre. Beck passe de la toile a la scene (1945-1963) 2) l'exil volontaire en europe produit un effet d'etrangete. Le living theatre cree collectivement un style de jeu ou l'engagement physique des acteurs est pousse a l'extreme par un effet de distanciation. Le living theatre est une societe experimentale. (1964-1968) 3) le legs de cain est un ensemble de pieces sur les themes du pouvoir et de l'argent, faites pour les lieux non specifiques de la manifestation theatrale. Le living theatre complete son vocabulaire du mouvement par l'etude de la biomecanique de meyerhold. (1968-1978) dans les annees 80, le groupe retourne sur les scenes des theatres pour y developper des techniques de participation ou il donne aux publics, la possibilite de repeter les pieces pour rejoindre les acteurs sur la scene.
