We intend to show that the concept of "laicite" when dealing with contemporary issues is far from being outdated. It may keep on guiding the thought and action of our contemporaries provided it is constantly submitted to critical examination which its very principle demands the first part deals with the analysis of the "french triumphant laicite" at the turn of the xixth century and is attempt to develop a threefold project : socio political, moral and cultural. The second part aims at painting out some philosophical antecedents of the idea of "laicite", taking into account the contribution of marsile de padoue, of the spirit of reform, of the humanists, of spinoza, kant, of french progressism : from the encyclopedists to a. Comte via condorect. The third part confronds the ideal of "laicite" to the problems raised by mixed cultures and by the exercise of demorcraty in technocratic societies and also to contemporay moral aspirations. It strives to define a "laicite" which is both true to its origins and very modern in a world where obstacles to the ratioan existence of humanity have appeared.

On se propose de mettre le concept de laicite a l'epreuve des problemes contemproains et de montrer que loin d'etre caduc, celui-ci peut continuer a guider encore la reflexion et l'action de nos contemporains a condition de la soumettre constamment a l'examen critique que lui impose son principe meme. Une premiere partie est consacree a l'analyse de la "laicite triomphante en france au tournant du xixeme siecle et de sa tentative de developper un triple projet : socio-politique, moral et culturel. La deuxieme partie cherche a degager quelques "antecedents philosophiques de l'idee laique" en degageant les apports de marseille de padoue, de l'esprit de la reforme et des humanistes, de spinoza, de kant et du progressisme francais, des encyclopedistes a auguste comte en passant par condorcet. La troisieme partie cfonfronts l'ideal laique a la question du metissage des cultures, aux problemes de l'exercice de la democratie dans les societes technocratiques, aux aspirations morales contemporaines. . . Elle s'efforce de definir, dans un contexte marque par de nouveaux obstacles a l'existence rationnelle de l'humanite, une laicite a la fois fidele a ses origines et pleinement actuelle.
