This dissertation studies alle gorical interpretation of greek myths, its aims and its proceedings, chiefly by an examination of a short book devoted to this kind of exegesis, written by the stoic philosopher l. Annaeus cornutus, the master of the latin poet persius, in the time of nero. An important introduction reminds some aspects of presocratic and stoic exegesis. We propound there some views oposed to current opinion, viz about theagenes of rhegion, who was not the first allegorist, or about apollodorus of athens, who was primarily a mythograph, not a stoic allegorist. Our translation is based upon the text of k. Lang, leipzig, 1881, taking into account all the improvements done on this text from this date. A running commentary is added,giving chiefly parallel interpretations by other ancient writers.

Le present travail examine l'interpretation allegorique des mythes grecs, ses intentions et ses procedes, particulierement a partir de l'etude d'un petit ouvrage consacre a ce type d'exegese par le philosophe stoicien l. Annaeus cornutus, le maitre du poete perse, a l'epoque de neron. L'introduction importante rappelle certains aspects de l'exegese presocratique et stoicienne. Nous y proposons quelques vues opposees a l'opinion courante, ainsi sur theagene de rhegion, qui n'est pas le premier allegoriste ou sur apollodore d'athenes qui fut un mythographe et non un allegoriste. Notre traduction a ete faite sur le texte de k. Lang, leipzig, 1881, en tenant compte des ameliorations apportees a ce texte depuis cette date. Un commentaire continu donne, en particulier, les interpretations paralleles proposees par d'autres auteurs anciens.
