La philosophie et l'anthropologie de Clémence Royer : un exemple de circulation des idées philosophiques et scientifiques en Europe, dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle

The standpoint selected by the author of the thesis is the one that clemence royer maintains : philosophy must be a synthetical explanation of man's relationship to the world. As shown in chapter 1, this synthesis follows a logical order and is arranged into a system, the main points of that system making up the different chapters of the thesis. Chapter 2 deals with the ontology of clemence royer and her theory of the atom. Chapter 3 develops the philosophy of living that characterizes the translator of darwin. Chapter 4 analyses her philosophical anthropology. Chapter 5 exposes the ethics that can be applied to man and to nature. Chapters 6 and 7 analyse the author's theories regarding the best possible economic and social organisation of human societes and the need for freedom of thought, particularly as far as women are concerned. Clemence royer has, on the whole, achieved her project of a synthetic philosophy, confronting it to philosophies of her time, those of comte, spencer and haeckel her philosophy bears the seal of a philosophical tradition : the search for truth, founded, in her case, on a direct relationship to reality.

La perspective adoptee par l'auteur de la these est celle qui est revendiquee par clemence royer. La philosophie doit etre une explication synthetique des rapports de l'homme au monde. Cette synthese est ordonnee et systematique, les points essentiels de ce systeme constituant les differents chapitres de la these comme le montre le premier chapitre. Le chapitre 2 aborde l'ontologie de clemence royer et sa theorie de l'atome. Le chapitre 3 developpe la philosophie du vivant propre a la traductrice de darwin. Le chapitre 4 analyse son anthropologie philosophique. Le chapitre 5 expose l'ethique applicable a l'homme et a la nature. Les chapitres 6 et 7 analysent les theories de l'auteur concernant l'organisation economique et sociale souhaitable pour les societes, et la necessite de la liberte de pensee, notamment pour les femmes. Clemence royer a, dans l'ensemble, realise son projet de philosophie synthetique, en le confrontant a des philosophies de son temps, celles de comte, spencer et haeckel sa philosophie porte la marque d'une tradition philosophique: la recherche de la verite, fondee ici sur un rapport direct au reel.
