Using the theoretical and methodological foundations provided by the regulation theory, this study is centered around a basic hypothesis : the family is an essential institution to understand the operation of the wage relation both at the productive and reproductive level. The adequate characterisation of the wage relation in a particular society requires the characterisation of its familial forms as well as of the relations between these two levels. On the basis of this hypothesis, the wage relation is studied in portugal for the period 1820-1990. That analysis permit us to identify the evolution and the different forms taken by the wage relation in which, together with the family forms, emigragion appears to play one of the most important roles.

En partant du cadre theorique et methodologique de la theorie de la regulation, la presente these se centre sur une hypothese essentielle: celle que la famille est une institution necessaire a la comprehension du fonctionnement au niveau productif et reproductif d'un rapport social fondamental a l7etude des societes capitalistes, le rapport salarial. Toute caracterisation des formes prises pa le rapport salarial dans une societe particuliere doit ainsi etre accompagnee d'une caracterisation des formes familiales et des mecanismes qui rendent celles-ci fonctionnelles par rapport a la regulation salariale en oeuvre. Suivant cette hypothese on a entrpris l7etude du rapport salarial au portugal, pour la periode 1820-1990, en arrivant a la caracterisation de differentes formes de regulation salariale dans lesquelles l'emigration prend un role majeur.
