Image et dissemblance : étude sur la notion d'image chez Plotin et Saint Augustin

This study tries, not to search after a pagan source of the augustinian imago in the plotinian thought of the image, but to explore this notion as a privileged place to collate these two intellectual worlds that are the ending paganism and the christianity. So, the choice of these two authors - plotinus and augustine - does not obey only some historical motives (the link of the libri platonicorum). More important is the place that holds in the works of the thinker of the enneads and this famous latin reader. This notion is a central theme in the both works, interlacing philosophy and theology, cosmology and anthropology, aesthetics and ethics, ontology and psychology. The analysis describes the fonction of the image in the plotinian ontology, in which this notion makes a central place in the thought of the constitution of every being, from the intelligible to the most material bodies; and the place occupied by this notion in the augustinian meditation on the link joining the creature, the god creating and forming them "at his image and likeness". Through the augustinian renewal of some of the plotinian concepts the author tries to appreciate the divergence between these two thoughts of the image.

Cette etude s'efforce, non de reperer, dans la reflexion plotinienne sur l'image, une source paienne de l'imago augustienne, mais d'explorer la notion d'image comme un lieu privilegie pour confronter les deux univers de pensee que sont le paganisme finissant et le christianisme. Le choix des deux auteurs - plotin, augustin - n'obeit donc pas seulement a des motivations historiques, qui s'attacheraient au lien que tisse, entre eux, l'heritage de quelques libri platonicorum. Plus importante est la place que le penseur des enneades et son celebre lecteur latin menagent a l'image dans leur reflexion. Cette notion est, dans l'une et l'autre oeuvres, un theme central, qui entrecroise philosophie et theologie, cosmologie et anthropologie, esthetique et ethique, ontologie et psychologie. L'analyses'attache a decrire la fonction de la notion d'image dans l'ontologie plotinienne, ou elle est au centre de la reflexion sur la constitution de tous les etres, depuis l'intelligible jusqu'aux corps les plus materiels; et la place qu'elle occupe dans la meditation augustinienne sur le lien qui unit les creatures, et plus particulierement l'homme, au dieu qui les cree et les forme "a son image et a sa ressemblance". A travers la reprise augustinienne de certains concepts plotiniens, l'auteur s'attache a mesurer l'ecart entre ces deux pensees de l'image, en differenciant constitution de soi et creation par dieu, don de l'etre et dette du cree, et en comparant la facon respective dont la reflexion sur l'image, chez plotin et chez augustin, permet d'ordonner les figures mauvaises de la dissemblance.
