Realized from a corpus of archives of more than one thousand documents, this thesis includes two parts, the first one is about Joseph Merklin's career from his birth in Oberhausen (Germany ) in 1819 to his death in Nancy in 1905. The second one is especially devoted to the life of the firm from the beginning in Brussels in 1843 to the liquidation in Lyons in 1976. The story of the house of Daublaine-Callinet, bought by J. Merklin in 1855, brings some essential materials to understand how Merklin gained a firm footing in France. The life of the firm is permanently connected with the economic, cultural and political context of the French industrial society of the second part of the nineteenth century. In this analysis can be found the role of the national and universal exhibitions, the story of the organ committee and the study of the market of the cathedral organs. The list of all the patents of invention concerning the organ building registered in France from 1791 to 1900 (chronological classification of the patents and alphabetical classification of the patentees) allows us to understand the role played by Joseph Merklin in the race towards progress and to minimize the problem of the use of electricity in organ-building. A lot of unpublished letters from Widor, Saint-Saens, Franck, Guilmant, Dallier, Batiste, Gounod, Dubois. . . Gives an idea of the high reputation of the house and show the intimate links Joseph Merklin had created with the most eminent musicians of his time.

Réalisée à partir d'un corpus d'archives de plus de mille pièces, cette étude comprend deux parties. La première retrace la carrière de Joseph Merklin, depuis sa naissance à Oberhausen (Bade) en 1819 jusqu'à sa mort à Nancy en 1905. La seconde est plus spécialement consacrée à la vie de l'entreprise, depuis sa création à Bruxelles en 1843 jusqu'à la liquidation à Lyon en 1976. L'histoire de la maison Daublaine-Callinet, achetée par Joseph Merklin en 1855, apporte des éléments indispensables pour comprendre l'ancrage rapide et profond dont a bénéficié la maison Merklin en France. La vie de l'entreprise est reliée en permanence au contexte économique, culturel et politique de la société industrielle française de la seconde moitié du 19e siècle. S'inscrivent dans cette analyse, le rôle des expositions nationales et universelles, l'histoire de la commission des orgues et l'étude du marché des orgues des cathédrales. La liste de tous les brevets d'invention concernant la facture d'orgues déposés en France de 1791 à 1900 (classement chronologique des brevets et classement alphabétique des brevets) permet de mesurer le rôle joué par Joseph Merklin dans la course au progrès et de relativiser le problème de l'application de l'électricité à la facture des orgues. Des lettres inédites de Widor, Saint-Saëns, Franck, Guilmant, Dallier, Batiste, Gounod, Dubois. . . Donnent une idée de la réputation dont jouissait la maison et montrent quels liens Joseph Merklin…
