This research studies Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac’s work from a philosophical point of view. The coherence of cyranian thought makes itself up in demanding to think reality as entirely material. The originality of cyranian process consists in offering several answers liable to fulfil such a demand. If everything can be explained by matter and its movements, there are several ways to think the nature of matter, and the nature of its activity. Cyranian questioning takes fully into account its contemporary science. Besides, Cyrano appropriates the path from a close world to an infinite universe, and means to think the infinite multiplicity of the worlds. Lastly, men are conceived as through and through material. So this research plays a part to the revaluation of the relationship between libertinism and science, through the way Cyrano uses physics in order to conceive the world without needing God.

Abstract FR:

Cette recherche appréhende l’œuvre de Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655) d’un point de vue proprement philosophique. La cohérence de la pensée cyranienne se constitue dans l’exigence de penser le réel comme intégralement matériel. L’originalité de la démarche consiste à proposer plusieurs réponses susceptibles de remplir une telle exigence. Si tout peut s’expliquer par la matière et ses mouvements, il y a plusieurs façons de penser la nature de la matière, et celle de son activité. L’interrogation cyranienne prend alors pleinement en compte les enjeux de la science qui lui est contemporaine. En outre, Cyrano fait sien le passage d’un monde clos à un univers infini, et se propose de penser la pluralité infinie des mondes. Enfin, les hommes sont pensés comme matériels de part en part. Cette étude contribue alors à réévaluer les rapports du libertinage à la science, à travers la façon dont Cyrano met à contribution la physique pour penser le monde en se passant de Dieu.
