What is the Rabelaisian imagination made of ? How is it built ? On what basement ? With what symbols ? This study attempts to put in light the satirical and moral symbols used by Rabelais’s fancy and wit, to entertain and edify his readers. It attempts to show in what system these images get organized. To what sources they belong : to antiquity, bible, middle ages and French renaissance ; to what pressures they obey, and what shapes they can take. Three of these shapes may define the Rabelaisian creation : the first one is entertaining, the second one, subversive, and the third one is defensive. The system consistency, the balanced structure of symbols and characters, are specially emphasized.

Qu'est-ce que l'imaginaire, en général, et chez Rabelais ? De quels éléments il se compose et comment il s'organise. . . Le but de cette étude est la recherche du système d'images qu'utilise le conteur, pour divertir, désabuser, édifier son lecteur. A quelles sources antiques, bibliques, médiévales, renaissantes, s'abreuve l'inspiration rabelaisienne ? Les trois formes de l'imaginaire comique qui caractérisent l' œuvre de Rabelais : imaginaire récréatif, subversif, défensif, constituent les trois parties de cette étude, qui met l'accent sur la cohérence d'un système, ou personnages et images trouvent leur équilibre.
