In order to give his novels a philosophical signifiance with out spoiling their artistic form, Michel Tournier resorts to mythology and among various myths, he shows a particular interest for that of the superman which is at the same time omnipresent and underlying in his work. This myth is an indispensable key to a true, deep understandig of his own world, so rich and original. The study of its origins, of the forms it assumes in his universe, of the ideas it supports, throws a new light on its real importance and proves that. For Michel Tournier, the writer is in fact a privileged kind of supermansuch a conviction results from a neo-romantic influence, which appears clearly in all his novels and gives them, undeniably, a powerful prophetic quality.

Pour donner à son œuvre une dimension philosophique sans nuire à la forme romanesque, Michel Tournier a recours à la mythologie. Parmi tous les mythes qu'il utilise, celui du surhomme a une place éminente. A la fois omniprésent et sous-jacent, il fonctionne, semble-t-il, comme une clé sans laquelle le lecteur n'accède que difficilement et imparfaitement à la signification profonde d'une création extrêmement riche et originale. En étudiant les origines de ce mythe, la manière dont il est véhiculé, les grandes idées qu'il sous-tend, on peut espérer en détecter la véritable portée. Pour Michel Tournier, l'écriture est certainement une forme privilégiée de surhumanité. Cette conviction témoigne d'une influence néoromantique illuminant tous ses romans et leur conférant un souffle et une dimension prophétiques indéniables.
