Le Voyage en Orient de Nerval et l'écriture de l'Orient : Nerval et les figures de l'altérité

Two trends in this study : on the one hand, the analysis of the way nerval' "i" and eastern otherness meet, on the hand the confrontation of the representaiton and the stakes of this encounter with the form it assumes in other works pertraining to "orientophily" of the nineteenth century. The study of the dialectics between identity selfsameness and otherness, under the specific guise it takes with the encounter of the east, constitutes the first axis of research. Thus we endeavour to tag and to analyse the problematic figures (for instance the one of the black slave woman) as well as the most subtle incarnations in nerval's textuality (so we are lead to put forward the notions of "threshold" and "puzzlement", associated to the constitution and discussion of the eastern strangeness) of this otherness. In the course of the chapters, we shall examine the repositionning of the story and of the narrator around from about this repreesentation of eastern otherness and its ability to destabilise the selfsameness of the "i"; we shall then discuss the notions of wandering and chimera. By the same token, and within the framework of what must appear as an instrumental comparison, aiming at singling out of the journey in the east, this is punctually confronted to other texts works, within the framework of a reflexion that deflects towards an attempt to redefine the notions of exotism and foreign parts.

Deux fils dans ce travail : d'une part l'etude des modalites de la rencontre du "je" nervalien et de l'alterite orientale, d'autre part la confrontation de la representation et des enjeux de cette rencontre avec la forme qu'elle revet dans d'autres oeuvres relevant de l'"orientophilie" du dix-neuvieme siecle. L'etude de la dialectique identite alterite, sous la forme specifique qu'elle prend avec la rencontre de l'orient, constitue le premier objet de recherche. On s'attache ainsi a reperer et a analyser les figures les plus problematiques problematisees par exemple celle de l'esclave noire) mais aussi les incarnations les plus subtiles dans la textualite nervalienne (ainsi est-on conduit a proposer les notions" d'etat de seuil" et de "perplexite", associees a la constitution et a la discussion de l'etrangete orientale) de cette alterite. Au fil des chapitres sont examines les repositionnements du recit et du narrateur autour a partir a propos de cette representation de l'alterite orientale et de son pouvoir de destabilisation de l'identite du "je"; sont alors mises en discussion les notions d'errance et de chimere. Parallele, et dans le cadre de ce qui doit apparaitre comme un comparatisme instrumental, visant a singulariser le voyage en orient, celui-ci est confronte ponctuellement a d'autre testes oeuvres, dans le cadre d'une reflexion qui s'inflechit vers une tentative de redefinition des notions d'exotisme et d'ailleurs.
