Jean le bel, author of a chronicle in the xivth century, recounts the beginnings of the hundred years' war. His work inspired the first writings of froissart. The thesis studies the vision of the facts and the perception of the events and the men through this chronicler; it compares jean le bel's point of view to those of other french or english story tellers in the period. The work consists in six points: ethics, causes, time, society, characters, historical discours. The ethics form a first division, followed by an analysis of the perception of rational or irrational causes of facts, then a study of the temporel representation, both objective and subjective, of events and space. The vision of the social world, the description of groups and institutions, the literary representation of a few historical characters forms the fourth and firfth parts; the sixth one is devoted to a study of a few aspects of historical discourse. The appendix includes the edition of an unpublished part of the manuscript, a chronology of events, a few family tress and maps, illustrations concerning events of the chronicle, a biographical index of medieval authors quoted in the thesis. The bibliography is classified by sections.

Jean le bel, auteur d'une histoire au xive siecle, raconte les premieres phases de la guerre de cent ans. Son oeuvre a inspire les premiers ecrits de froissart. La these etudie la vision des faits et la perception des evenements et des hommes a travers ce chroniqueur; elle compare le point de vue de jean le bel a ceux d'autres narrateurs historiens francais et anglais de la meme epoque. La reflexion s'ordonne autour de sic poles: ethique, cause, temps, societe, individus, discours historique. L'ethique du chroniqueur constitue un premier volet, suivi d'une analyse de la perception de la causalite, rationnelle ou irrationnelle, des faits, puis d'une etude de la reprsentation temporelle, objective et subjective, des evenements et de l'espace. La vision du monde social, la description des groupes et des institutions, la representation de quelques personnages historiques forment les quatrieme et cinquieme parties; la sixieme est consacree a un examen de quelques aspects du discours historique. Les annexes comportent l'edition d'une portion manuscrite inedite, une chronologie des evenements, quelques tableaux genealogiques et cartes, des illustrations en rapport avec les evenements de la chronique, un index biographique des auteurs medievaux cites dans la these. La bibliographie comporte un classement par rubriques.
