La quête métaphysique dans la poésie moderne des années 1920 aux années 1960 (Jules Supervielle, Saint-John Perse et Pierre Jean Jouve)

In this study, we have tried to outline the metaphysical quest as it appears in modem poetry from the beginning of the century - the middle of that troubled period from the crack of the first world war to the beginning of the moderm era after the second word war -, especially the poetry of three poets : Jules Supervielle, Saint-John Perse and Pierre Jean Jouve. From the outset, their poetry claims to be the way to a search, continuously thrown into question, and so, basically dynamic, for the meaning of being. It is indeed the fruit of an epoch, because this poetry is considered to be influenced by that epoch, particularly through the will, which it doesn't deny, to overthrow unreal ideals and to enlighten old taboos, but its main characteristics is to distinguish itself through its own search of historical concems. Therefore, a certain trend towords pure poetry characterizes these poets' metaphysical quest. This quest goes through the questioning of the notion of essence and the existence of god. However, the convergence of their insights does not prevent them from standing faraway from each other concerning their answers to the quest : dialogue for Supervielle, mouvement for Saint-John Perse and mystical monologue for Jouve. Although so different by their nature and by their approach to metaphysical problems, they still personify, not strictly speaking, a trend but a really specific literary perspective.

Dans cette étude, nous avons voulu dresser une esquisse de la quête métaphysique telle qu'elle apparaît dans la poésie moderne du début du siècle- au milieu de cette époque troublée, allant de la félure de la Première Guerre mondiale au début de l'ère de la modernisation après la Seconde Guerre mondiale -, tout particulièrement à travers la poésie de trois poètes : Jules Supervielle, Saint-John Perse et Pierre Jean Jouve. La poésie de ces derniers se propose dès l'abord comme le moyen d'une recherche, constamment remise en question, et donc essentiellement dynamique, du sens de l'être. Certes, elle est le fruit d'une époque, en ce qu'elle se voit influencée par celle-ci, en particulier à travers cette volonté, qu'elle ne dénie pas, de renverser les idéaux irréels et de démystifier les anciens tabous. Mais sa caractéristique principale est de se démarquer par sa propre recherche des préoccupations historiques. Aussi une certaine orientation vers la poésie pure définit la quête métaphysique de ces poètes. Cette quête passe par la mise en question de la notion d'essence et de l'existence de Dieu. Cependant, la convergence de leur regard n'empêche pas qu'ils soient éloignés l'un de l'autre relativement aux réponses qu'ils donnent à la quête : le dialogue pour Supervielle, le mouvement pour Saint-John Perse, et le monologue mystique pour Jouve. A la fois différents par leurs tempéraments et par leur abord des problématiques métaphysiques, ils incarnent ainsi non pas à proprement parler un courant mais une optique littéraire bien spécifique.
