The work of abdelkebir khatibi deals with questions that the third world intellectuals have not stopped asking for about fifty years : progress and withdrawal of civilization, means and aims of decolonization, tradition and modernity, acculturation, relation to the so-called developed nations. . . Yet in a manner that makes it a courageous and enlightened expression of a franc-tireur who is beyond the beaten track, beyond what we are used to saying and doing in order to solve these questions. His weapon is absolute: he claims a right to uncomrpomising difference, towards both east and west. Strong with this iconoclastic play on identity, the literary experience may get rid of some brakes upon renewal and flourishing, in particular that which condemns the use of the french language on behalf of a right to an exclusive return to arabic, to the language of the koran. It may improve and develop normally within the uncompromising space of bi-language, the common space, with elusive outlines, between the letter (french) and the recall (arabian), between the west and the east, between the other and the same. . . Like the laghreb ("the sunset", "the west" in arabic) which draws its richness, its real identity (its difference) from its duality, from its pluralism, from its diversity. . . In short, from its inflexible refusal of too well known and recognized schemes of thought and analysis.

L'oeuvre d'abdelkebir khatibi traite les questions que les intellectuels du tiers-monde ne cessent de (se) poser depuis environ cinquante ans : progres et retrait des civilisations, moyens et fins de la decolonisation, tradition et modernite, acculturation, rapport aux nations dites developpees. . . Cependant d'une maniere qui en fait l'expression courageuse et demystificatrice d'un franc-tireur qui se situe au-dela des sentiers battus, de ce que l'on a coutume de dire et de faire pour resoudre ces questions. Son arme absolue : la revendication d'un droit a la difference intraitable, a la fois vis-a-vis de l'orient et de l'occident. Forte de ce jeu iconoclaste sur l'identite, l'experience litteraire peut se defaire de certains freins au renouvellement et a l'epanouissement, notamment de celui qui condamne l'emploi de la langue francaise au nom d'un droit a un retour exclusif a l'arabe, a la langue du coran. Elle peut se cultiver et se developper normalement dans l'espace intraitable de la bi-langue, espace mitoyen aux contours insaisissable entre la lettre francaise et le rappel arabe, entre l'occident et l'orient, entre l'autre et le meme. . . A l'image de ce maghreb ("le couchant", "l'occident" en arabe) qui tire sa richesse, sa vraie identite (sa difference) de sa dualite, de sa pluralite, de sa diversite. . . Bref, de son intraitabilite a partir des schemas trop connus et reconnus de pensee et d'analyse.
