We have limited the scope of our study to the central pyrenean area, as throughout the 19th century, its spas were famous gathering places which then attracted tourists and alpinists. Our research has been performed along four distinct lines of study : 1) a study of the particular places which are associated to the legends, the lifespan of the tales and the frequency of their occurences. 2) a literary study, concerned not only with the authors'opinions on the legends, but also with their attitudes -both mental and aesthetic- and their intentions regarding such material. 3) a study of the evolution of the legendary tales. What we have attempted to do in describe the genesis of legends that originate, in particular, from tales of mountaineering accidents. 4) the last part of our study focuses on the specificity of the legends. Although the influence of boblical and mythological texts on the legendary tales is undeniable, pyrenean legend nonetheless derives its mots characteristic features from its geographical settings, historical context, social, economic and cultural backgrounds and also from the relatively late emergence of christianity in the area we feel that there lies its originality.

L'etude du legendaire pyreneen a ete realisee dans le cadre des pyrenees centrales. Les legendes ont ete classes en registres (religieus, historique, orogeniques, toponymiques et feeriques). La recherche porte, d'abord, sur les lieux auxquels les legendes sont associees sur la duree d'attestations des recits, sur leur frequence. L'etude litteraire s'interesse a la position des divers auteurs par rapports aux legendes rapportees, a leurs intentions et a leur comportement mental et esthetique face a un tel materiau. Un troisieme partie est consacree au devenir des recits legendaires et au processus de la legendification. Enfin, est mise en valeur la specificite de ces legendes. Bien que le legendaire pyreneen subisse indeniablement l'influence des recits bibliques et mythologiques, il reste cependant fortement marque -et trouve la son originalitepar le cadre geographique, le contexte historique, le milieu socio-economicoculturel- et par la christianisation relativement tardive de cette region.
