Miroir du rêve : essai sur la "La Tentation de Saint Antoine" de Gustave Flaubert

The title, mirror of the dream, sums up the essence itself of the temptation of Saint Anthony. As a matter of fact, this book forms a space where Flaubert’s dreams are reflected and the procession of Saint Anthony’s dreams passes along. The first part of our work is assigned to an examination of the formal structure of the text. After the analysis of the stage-directions and the dialogues we could verify that several factors derogate from the conventional rules of the theatre and therefore prove the genre of this book to be a novel. In the second part we analyzed five themes of temptation and the chain of reading - seeing - dreaming. And in the third part we studied the characteristics of Flaubert’s idea of an artist in relation to Saint Anthony. All things considered, the temptation of Saint Anthony seems to be a dramatization of a mental spectacle in which the author's vision of the world and his artistic conflicts are exteriorized. So we have to understand the temptation of Saint Anthony as a symbolic representation of a creative soul who is possessed by art.

Le titre, miroir du rêve, résume l'essence même de la tentation de saint Antoine. Elle forme en effet un espace ou se mire le rêve de Flaubert et ou se déroulent les rêves de saint Antoine. Notre travail est constitué de trois parties. La première partie est consacrée à l'examen de la particularité formelle de l'œuvre. Apres les analyses des didascalies et des dialogues, nous avons constaté que divers facteurs dérogeant aux règles conventionnelles du théâtre témoignaient de son appartenance au domaine romanesque. Ensuite nous avons analyse, dans la deuxième partie, les cinq thèmes de tentation ainsi que l'enchainement des trois actes de lire - voir - rêver. Et la dernière partie est consistée à étudier les caractéristiques de la figure de l'artiste flaubertien dans son rapport à saint Antoine. La tentation de saint Antoine s'est avérée être une mise en forme littéraire d'un spectacle mental ou s'extériorise la vision du monde de l'auteur et ou se dramatisent ses conflits artistiques. Nous pourrions donc mieux comprendre la valeur juste de cette œuvre en la prenant pour une représentation symbolique d'une âme créatrice possédée par l'art.
