In the illuminations where he unfolds fully some major themes linked to the notion of modernity: “subject”, “space” and “time”, Rimbaud creates his unique universe that brings to feel the poetical modernity. It is not neither by the intuition nor by the simple, pure and gratuitous imagination that the new poetical universe will be built on the Illuminations, but with the conscience and the very clear poetical means of the poet, as spiritual worker: fusion of heterogeneous elements, both contradictory and supplementary relationship between poetical personages, abrupt rupture of poetical images, abstraction of forms, and finally discontinuity or fragments of poems itselves and its' styles, evocative effects of the world ordering after the destruction, etc. In other words, Rimbaud aims to arrive to the “unknown” of the modern world with objective means that are the renewed poetical language, the restoration of the self after a rigorous auto-examination, and the attitude of the poet-worker, etc. In this sense, the formula of Rimbaud, “it is necessary to be absolutely modern”, translates a double phenomenon: the deep change of his sensitivity and his research of the poetical novelty.

Dans les Illuminations où il déploie pleinement quelques thèmes majeurs liés à la notion de modernité: « sujet », « espace » et « temps », Rimbaud crée son univers unique qui amène à ressentir la modernité poétique. Ce n'est ni par l'intuition ni par l'imagination simple, pure et gratuite que le nouvel univers poétique sera bâti sur les Illuminations, mais avec la conscience et les moyens, poétiques très clairs du poète, comme travailleur spirituel: fusion des éléments hétéroclites, relation à la fois contradictoire et supplémentaire entre des personnages poétiques, rupture abrupte des images poétiques, abstraction des formes, et enfin discontinuité ou fragments des poèmes eux-mêmes et de leurs styles, les effets évocateurs du monde s'ordonnant après la destruction, etc. Autrement dit, Rimbaud vise à arriver à « l'inconnu » du monde moderne avec les moyens dits objectifs que sont le langage poétique renouvelé, la restitution du soi-même après un auto-examen rigoureux, et l'attitude prométhéenne du poète-travailleur, etc. En ce sens, la formule de Rimbaud, « il faut être absolument moderne », traduit un double phénomène: le changement profond de sa sensibilité et sa recherche de la nouveauté poétique
